Things That Make You Go Hmmm
Time Suck
Mar 10th
Feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the side projects I have going on here. Not too mention that WonderWife and I are creating our little startup as well.
Your Tweets Cannot Be Copyright Protected
Feb 25th
As messages sent via Twitter cannot be longer than 140 characters, they cannot be copyrighted. However original, witty, or profound they may be, nothing more than good manners protects your original expression of authorship. If you wish to let other people quote or use your Tweets, you need not “license” them; indeed, technically, you cannot license them, since they are in the public domain the instant you publish them.

Embrace The Mundane
Feb 25th
When asked by Scott Hansen of Iso 50 how he overcomes creative blocks, this is how Michael C. Place responded:
Now the important problem solving part: Take the plates & pans to the sink. Run a mixture of hot and cold (not too hot) water. Add a smidgeon of washing up liquid (preferably for sensitive skin). Start washing up, the mundane kicks in. The mind clears and new thoughts and ideas appear. Enjoy a second glass of wine to savour the moment.
Besides the fact that WonderWife would really appreciate some help in the kitchen, doing this and other tasks to relax More >
How A New Jobless Era Will Transform America
Feb 21st
The Great Recession may be over, but this era of high joblessness is probably just beginning. Before it ends, it will likely change the life course and character of a generation of young adults. It will leave an indelible imprint on many blue-collar men. It could cripple marriage as an institution in many communities. It may already be plunging many inner cities into a despair not seen for decades. Ultimately, it is likely to warp our politics, our culture, and the character of our society for years to come.

NASA’s Budget Skyrocketing?
Feb 5th
The general public perception of NASA is that it’s an inefficient, unnecessary drain on the US budget. How bad a drain? From The Space Review:
In a just-completed study, we asked respondents what percentage of the national budget is allocated to NASA … NASA’s allocation, on average, was estimated to be approximately 24% of the national budget (the NASA allocation in 2007 was approximately 0.58% of the budget.)
Recently a budget was submitted to cut funding for NASA. This is not good news. There are better ways of cutting government waste.

Recycle and Replace
Feb 3rd
We need to rethink the way our government and the Department of Defense spend tax payer dollars. Years and billions of dollars are consumed on research and development to wait approval. If your design is selected, you win the huge contract and reap billions. If your design lost out, well, you still receive a hefty sum. See further: the F-22 and Y-23. Recently the Pentagon cut funding for the F-22s already in service and stopped further development. Apparently it is too costly and not needed.
Why not manufacture the designs and machines that have worked previously? An F-16 fighter is still More >

The Times
Feb 1st
Read not the Times. Read the Eternities.
From the essay Life Without Principle by Henry David Thoreau, who was complaining about gossip and the trivialities of the daily news long before any of us were born.
You’ve Got Rail
Jan 29th

I have been a big fan of high speed rail systems as a means of commuter transportation for years. I am also in favor of making rails as a transportation for shipping products a priority over semi-trucks. I am not a tree hugger but it is obvious that trucks as transportation are annoying, dirty and unsafe. Keep in mind that my own father has been a trucker for years and logged millions of miles without incident. No worries, dad. You will be retired before the high-speed wheels are on the tracks. Our History Is Science Fiction
Jan 24th
Anything you dream is fiction, and anything you accomplish is science, the whole history of mankind is nothing but science fiction.
